A Vacation in México
September, 2009
We were able to take an actual vacation (no classes, no workshops, no worries!) to Mérida, Yucatán, México. We traveled with Wanda, Mercedes and Jay Toohey, and stayed with our acquaintances Isabel and Luis at the bed and breakfast they run, Casa de Nena.
Here are some of our photos from the trip!
Friends
Roberta and Larry went on vacation with Wanda, Mercedes and Jay, and stayed with Isabel, Luis and Diego.
There and Back Again
A relatively short trip. Compared to going to Australia, for instance. The temperature was 40 degrees when flying out of Cancun, and 40 degrees when arriving back in Grand Rapids. Except, that is, for the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Casa de Nena
[www.casadenena.com] (click on "English" if necessary) was the wonderful (and affordable) place that was home for the week.
Mérida, Downtown
The capital city of the state of Yucatán, rich in cultural stuff to do and see.
Performances
Street musicians, cultural events and concerts were plentiful.
Progreso
A day at the beach.
Chichén Itzá
Spending the equinox at the Mayan ruins to see the shadow play on El Castillo, among other things.

Dzibilchaltún
A site of Mayan ruins of a different sort than Chichén Itzá, with permission to climb this time. Bring your bathing suits if you want to swim in the cenote.
Food and Drinks
One of the more interesting parts of any trip is the food.
Hacienda Teya
An afternoon's adventure to an old plantation now serving as a restaurant and fancy party location.
Artwork
Inside and out, visual art seemed as plentiful as the dance and music.
Scenery
Sometimes it felt like being part of a postcard photo, or part of a movie set.
Mérida, Cathedral of St. Ildefonso
Big, old, and fascinating, including what may be the largest indoor crucifix.
Buildings and Monuments
Fascinating stuff in and around Mérida.
